For the Site Survey Task, we're required to find the exact coordinates of "field markers" (PVC pipe with white flag attached) from an observation point 1/2 mile away. The rules are not clear as to if we will be given exact heights of the markers.
One way to accomplish this task would be to use our telephoto camera to determine angles (center the top of the flag in the camera, use our tilt to find the angle). Record the first angle and GPS coordinates, drive a known distance (using GPS or encoders, whichever we find to be more accurate), and then find another angle (and GPS coords there). Then, use trig to determine the coordinates of the flag. This relies on:
- Being able to find two flat places far enough apart to take accurate angle measurements.
- Knowing the height of the field markers (at least, I think so, I'll have to check my trig)
- Being able to zoom our camera enough to be able to determine the different angles.
Section 3b of the manual (page 3) describes this task.
