Environmentally Sealed Song Reader
1 Project Overview
The Oregon State University Bioacoustics group is collecting audio recordings of birds in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Research Forest, and applying machine learning algorithms to these recordings to better understand how bird populations are responding to climate change. Using a device called a Songmeter, over 1TB of bird song data was retrieved over this last summer. They are usually recording between the months of March to July during the mating season. These Songmeters are water proof to be able to withstand the wet and warm Oregon weather, and are bolted to the ground with a stand. It has two microphones coming out the sides to record the bird songs and a LCD display to show the status of the device. Due to other sound interferences, the raw data needs to be filtered before the collected data can be analyzed. Songmeters are powered by 4 D-cell batteries, and have up to 64 GB of flash memory. In field conditions, they can record for about 20 minutes out of each hour, over a period of a week, before running out of batteries. The goal will be the ability to record without stopping for about one month. That would require 164GB of space recorded with mono at 16 kHz. Accessing the Songmeters to change the batteries and memory cards is difficult, because they are mostly located in remote, densely vegetated areas. Each of the Songmeters cost about $500, and there are currently about 15 of these Songmeters scattered in H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. To increase the efficiency of data collection in this project, we need a device for recording audio in the field that outperforms the Songmeter; specifically, it should be able to record audio continuously for at least a month, and preferably three months, while withstanding the outdoor conditions of H.J. Andrews. H.J Andrews is an experimental forest located about 40 miles east of Springfeild, Oregon off highway 126. This experimental forest has been a living laboratory since 1980 and home to hundreds of scientific experiments. Andrews Experimental Forest is a leader in analysis of forest and system ecosystem dynamics.
Minimum Requirements
* A device that records audio data in a digital format using high quality microphones, at a sampling frequency of at least 16 kHz
* The device must be able to record continuously for at least one month without requiring any human interaction. In particular, it must have a sufficient power supply and memory capacity
* The device must be able to withstand outdoor conditions, including: Rain, Temperatures between 0 F and 110 F
* The device must cost less than $500 to build
