  1. Project Overview

With the increased prevalence of the internet more and more people have become dependent on access to digital information. But while people have readily adopted new technology, whether that be digital cameras, online calendars, or split-second access to current information; there has yet to be an effective means of accessing these digital essentials without the cumbersome experience of sitting down in front of a computer. This project will require creativity and innovative engineering to develop a digital photo frame that can more fully engage the user with unique features, which few, if not any other similar products can offer. Such features would include convenient access to useful information, an energy conscious design, user-friendly interfaces, etc. The digital photo frame will allow users to move their digital information away from their desktop computer and into the living room, kitchen, bedroom, or wherever they may wish to have it displayed. This digital photo frame will have a sleek, modern design which will display information of the user’s choice in addition to their personal media in a way that blends with their home décor. This device should provide quick access to information such as the local weather forecast, the user’s calendar, or up-to-date news. In addition, the photo frame should support various types of media including digital photos and homemade videos. The photo frame will be designed to minimize energy consumption by turning off when not in use, or entering a stand by mode when no one is looking at it. Our goal is not to replace the user’s desktop computer or to reinvent the digital photo frame, but to create an engaging interface that enhances the user experience and satisfaction. This will be done by increasing user interaction with both their personal content, such as their digital pictures, and remote content from the internet all the while maintaining a low level of energy consumption. After several meetings with the customer, a set of basic requirements for the digital photo frame have been decided on and are listed below.

Project Requirements

  • Easy to use

  • Screen must be 5” or larger
  • User controls to change displayed image
  • Inexpensive in quantity
