BeaverSource

Welcome,

BeaverSource is a collaborative effort among many different departments on campus to create a code community for open source development at OSU. It attempts to provide a constructive and positive environment for FOSS software developers on campus. If you would like to start a project on BeaverSource all you have to do is fill out a Project Request form (OSU Students, Staff and Affiliates only). You can also browse the existing projects through the Project Listing. BeaverSource also provides a Social Network for project owners, members and contributors to communicate and learn more about other projects.

Using BeaverSource

The following OpenSource tools are currently provided to all BeaverSource Projects.

  • Code Revision Control What is Revision Control?
  • Bug Tracking
  • Project Wikis
If you have a project you would like to have hosted and are willing and allowed to release it under an Open Source license, then fill out the request form. All requests are moderated, please allow up a few days for processing. If you would like to get involved in a project listed on the Project Listing page, contact any one of the members to see about getting access to the project. Often it is a good idea to submit a few patches before asking for write access.

What is BeaverSource?

BeaverSource will serve as a combination of code repository and social networking site, providing students, staff, faculty, and affiliates with a sandbox in which to start FOSS projects and to explore projects started by their fellow community members. We hope to integrate more Free and Open Source Software into Oregon State University as a way of cutting costs, reducing reliance on outside vendors, and promoting sharing code and tools between departments. Projects hosted on BeaverSource will not only make use of the highly respected Trac project management system, but also contain links its members' social profiles, providing the opportunity to network and identify talented people within the university. Meet, Known, and Be Known!. FOSS also provides a unique opportunity for students to gain experience and interact with large, real world applications including univeristy and departmental projects while still taking classes, cutting down on the overhead of internships, or time off of school.

The BeaverSource team

BeaverSource was inspired by and partially funded through a NSF Cpath grant aimed at improving the undergraduate
computer science program here at OSU and encouraging more students from underrepresented groups such as women and minorities
